After a disappointing weekend the Chicago Cubs came back with a 2-1 series win over the @pittsburghpirates. It wasn't the pitching that carried the day for the Cubs either. The bats came to life for the Cubbies in their 2 wins. However, they are still inconsistent going virtually silent in the loss.
On Monday newly acquired Charlie Morton had a tough Cubs debut giving up 3 ER in 5 innings. He did manage to strike out 6 in the contest to give his team 5 points. Justin Grimm was the hightlight of the staff this night as he worked 1 inning out of the pen stranding 3 inherited runners and picking up a hold. The bats found their stride as only one player went negative and Brock Stassi got his 1st MLB hit and it was a doozy as he put it over the fence. Hunter Renfroe also homered and finished the night with 8 points. Kyle Schwarber and Andrew Romine tallied 4 points while Jon Jay scored 3. Final Score of the contest was Good Guys 34.7 to 3.8 for the Pirates.
Tuesday night was a completely different story. The bats went Ice cold as 4 players went the dark side scoring a combined -6.3 points. Danny Espinosa with his 8.2 and Joe Panik with 4 tried their best to make it close but the Cubs were in to deep of a hole. The Pirates were carried by Scooter Gennetts improbable 12 point explosion. The Pirate Bullpen also chipped in with 6.5 points and it was a tough loss for the Cubbies as they fell 19.9-8.9.
In the Rubber match on wednesday the Cubs were hoping from big things after Kyle Freeland's 22 point performance last Friday. Unfortunately he did not have his good stuff and got rocked in his start. Kyle finished with -2.833 not making it out of the 5th inning. A poor pitching performance usually means a Cubs loss but not this night. The Cubs infielders rallied with the bats. Andrew Romine led the way once again with a HUGE Grand Slam to highlight a 10 point performance. After a mild Slump Jonathan Villar Homered and had a single to earn 7.3 points and Joe Panik and Brock Stassi chipped in with 3.6 and 1.4 respectively. When asked about his young infielders The Cubs Manager stated "that guys really stepped up when we needed them to. Stassi comes in when Greg Bird has had explosive diarrhea and filled in really nice. We loved what Romine has been doing so gave him the spot start over Espi and look what he does. Goes and hits a grand slam. Panik has been Mr. Reliable Night in and night out. I am really happy with the performace and know we have a tough weekend ahead of us." Cubs finish off the series with a bang 23.8-3.367.
The Cubs do have a tough weekend ahead of them. They have the 1st place Cincinnati Reds and the @brandonl.
