The club used its first-round pick to select Heliot Ramos, a 17-year-old outfielder from Leadership Christian Academy in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Ramos is a right-handed power hitter and an above average runner whom scouts forecast as a middle of the order run producer.
Brewers scouting department said Ramos kept getting better every time one of their scouts saw him, and all his tools: power, speed, arm strength, defensive ability and contact skills grade as above average. “We think he’s a five-tool player, as one of the youngest players in the draft, and someone we think can stay in center field,” Baker said.
Ramos, who stands 6-foot-1 and is listed at 188 pounds, ran a 6.40 60-yard dash in early May. According to Baseball America, he hit a home run with a certified aluminum bat that some scouts estimated at more than 500 feet. He stole the show last July at the Under Armour All-America Game at Wrigley Field, going 3-for-3 and finishing a double away from hitting for the cycle against an opposing roster loaded with top pitching prospects. “In that setting, that boded well for him,” Baker said. “He already shows power for being very young. He can run. As he matures into his body, we feel we may have something special.”
