The Brewers fans were treated to some great baseball at the beginning of the year but the mentality changed rather fast for Barry and his management team as they slumped to a record of 60-102 overall, finishing last in the division 33 games behind leaders Cincinnati Reds and 3rd last in the league. The time has come for Barry to evaluate the season and what areas need improving as well as what the people of Milwaukee can look forward to for next season and the future.
Interviewer: Good morning Barry, its fair to say you must be glad the season is over and the guys are looking forward to next season and beyond.
Barry Baker (GM/coach):It hasnt been the best season for us thats for sure, to say it has been a write off would be very harsh but it definitely up to the standard that me and the boys set at the start of the year. It has been a learning curve for myself as well as for all the management involved and the players on the field, I have a lot to work on in the off season, on and off the field trying to fix some issues and improve the positives that we have seen in parts this past season.
Interviewer: You mentioned there about the amount of work you and the players have ahead of you, are you able to specify some of the areas of work you'll be attempting to improve on?
Barry Baker:That is something me and my staff will work on and are not prepared to discuss at this time, Im sure you guys have all types of stats for every team and player in the league so you can do a little research yourself.
Interviewer: To say you were busy in the trade market would be an understatement, the Brewers made a total of 41 trades throughout the season, would you say that was detrimental to the team in challenging for the division?
Barry Baker: I do business when I see an opportunity to get better whether it is for the present or the future. I came into the season with a nice mix of players that I hoped would pan out and deliver for the team on a large scale, we as the team realised that the fight was becoming tougher throughout the year with other teams strengthening around us which proved costly in the end. I for one second do not regret any trade I finalised though and yet think that this roster is destined for some good down the line.
Interviewer: Which trade has been the best deal for you and the team would you say?
Barry Baker: I can honestly say I have been happy with every player I have received so far and time will tell if they all work out. I have been really pleased with what I have seen from the likes of Teoscar Hernandez and Brett Phillips who were late comers but have shown signs of what to expect from them next year.
Interviewer: To follow on from that, who has most impressed you from your major league roster as well as your minor league squad?
Barry Baker: There have been pleasant surprises such as Jesus Aguilar who we acquired earlier on in the season from @illini1012 and has shown that his minor league season prior to this was no fluke, we look forward to seeing more from him next year. I have to take my hat off to the young stud named Nomar Mazara who has had a great year for a 22 year old guy who was in his 'sophomore' year. My team and I have seen very promising signs to say safely that he is our captain long term and a true leader.
The minor league stand out player? Can I pick all of them? We are fortunate enough to have a group of amazing players coming up quickly through the levels, its hard to look past the likes of Ronald Acuna who at 19 will be a major leaguer next year, Tatis Jr the future SS or Brandon Marsh who suffered an unfortunate injury but still finished with a .350 avg and double digit steals. My choice though is Yandy Diaz,3B who has been flat out solid throughout the year batting an absurd .350 with 60 walks to 56 K's, he's settled in very nicely and I wouldnt be surprised if he is our 3B next season and onwards.
Interviewer: Thanks for your time Barry
Barry Baker: No probs boss
