The Texas Rangers will travel on the road to Great American Ballpark on Friday evening as they prepare for the opening game of their interleague series clash versus the Cincinnati Reds.
Texas improved to five-games over .500 with a 36-31 overall record heading into their series finale in Boston against the Red Sox on Thursday. Now in second place in the AL West(world series rings for sale) standings, Texas has positioned itself as one of the contenders for the final Wild Card spot in the American League. Can the Rangers stay hot on the road in interleague series play at Great American Ballpark this weekend?
Texas finally called it quits on the Drew Smyly experiment after the left-hander posted a 1-5 record and an 8.40 ERA in 11 starts. With Smyly now officially out of the starting rotation, Friday will turn into a bullpen game for the Rangers, according to manager Chris Woodward. The door isn’t entirely shut on Smyly starting again this season for the Rangers, but they decided the left-hander needed more than just one more start to turn his season around. His spot in the rotation will be filled with a starter next week.
Texas has been one of the more pleasant surprises in the American League this season, thanks in part to an offense that ranks second in the MLB(championship rings) in runs scored and second in batting with runners in scoring position with a .281 average. They’ve scored the most runs over the last week with 44, despite hitting just six home runs during that span.
Cincinnati(Cincinnati Reds championship rings) will send right-hander Tyler Mahle to the hill on Friday in hopes of reversing his fortune on the mound. A quick look at Mahle’s peripherals and you’d think the right-hander is in the midst of a solid season for Cincinnati. He’s striking out better than a batter per inning for the first time in his career, while walking a career-low 1.90 hitters per nine innings and his xFIP (3.58) is nearly a full run lower than his current ERA. Yet, thanks to some bad luck and poor run support, Mahle finds himself with a 2-6 overall record and a 4.21 ER so far this season.
The Reds have scored more than three runs just four times in Mahle’s 12 starts, making it very difficult for him to factor into decisions when he’s pitched well enough to keep them in the game. He’s allowed three runs or less in five of his last seven starts. This will be his first career outing against the Rangers.
